Heartbreaking news has just been announced, closing a great chapter in anime history. Studio Gainax, the legendary animation studio that served fans for nearly 42 years, has officially completed bankruptcy procedures and dissolved. This means Gainax no longer exists legally as a company.
The official announcement came from director Hideaki Anno on Studio Khara’s website, marking the end of an empire that created masterpieces like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gurren Lagann, and many other classics.
Gainax’s Fall: From Financial Crisis to Scandal
Founded in 1984 by a group of brilliant minds including Hideaki Anno, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Hiroyuki Yamaga, Takami Akai, Toshio Okada, Yasuhiro Takeda, and Shinji Higuchi, Gainax immediately reshaped anime with unlimited creativity and ahead-of-its-time production quality.
However, Gainax began to spiral into financial trouble starting in 2012. Last year, the studio officially filed for bankruptcy at the Tokyo District Court due to worsening financial conditions.

The situation worsened when Tomohiro Maki, the studio’s representative director at the time, was arrested in December 2019 on charges of misconduct, severely damaging the studio’s image and reputation.
Last Thursday, Hideaki Anno confirmed that bankruptcy procedures have been completed and Gainax has been legally dissolved. He also assured that all rights to Gainax’s works, products, and achievements have been legally transferred back to the original owners and creators.
