For decades, the One Piece anime adaptation has delivered nearly weekly episodes without fail. While Toei Animation’s animators have made adjustments to ease their workload, a major change is set for 2026 to give the production team more rest.
During a recent live broadcast in Japan, Toei announced that the episode release schedule will shift starting next year. Although this news may be welcomed by animators, it will be interesting to see how anime fans react to this new chapter in the Grand Line.
One Piece Officially Cuts to 26 Episodes Per Year
In the recent livestream, Toei Animation revealed that from now on, the anime will release only twenty-six episodes annually. This marks a significant shift from previous years when Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates usually received a new episode every week.
Fans have previously voiced complaints about the series recycling old footage or stretching certain storylines from the original manga. While episodes will still air weekly for the remainder of this year, fans should prepare for the changes coming in 2026.
In an official statement, Ryūta Koike, the producer of the ONE PIECE series at Toei Animation, explained the upcoming change:
“Starting this January, the broadcast will be split into two parts each year, totaling 26 new episodes annually from 2026 onward. Although this reduces the total yearly episodes compared to past years, this strategic decision supports the progress and development of the anime series.”
Koike also emphasized: “Under this two-part structure, new episodes will blend more manga content, pacing, and speed while continuing to leverage the unique storytelling that only animation can offer.”
Three-Month Hiatus and First Look at the Elbaf Arc
Unfortunately for fans, Toei also announced that the One Piece anime will pause from January through March next year.
According to the announcement, the first part of the 2026 ONE PIECE anime will begin airing in April. Before that, the series will take a three-month production break from January to March. Toei suggested fans use this time to enjoy other One Piece content.
After the battle between Luffy and the Straw Hats against the World Government on Egghead Island, the Thousand Sunny will arrive at Elbaf, the island of giants. For this new arc, the Straw Hat crew will debut fresh new outfits to mark the occasion.
To celebrate this historic schedule change, the One Piece anime has also released the first images of the Elbaf Arc along with the crew’s updated looks for their upcoming adventure.
What Does This Mean for One Piece’s Future?
With One Piece shifting to a seasonal release schedule split into two cours, fans will need to adjust after years of weekly episodes.
However, this change should help the anime progress more smoothly. Fans have already seen how extra time improved the latter half of the Egghead Arc. The new schedule means fewer breaks or delays between new episodes.
As the franchise continues to enhance its visual quality with each episode, this schedule change is expected to greatly benefit the production team and help One Piece become even stronger.
