The story of One Piece is heating up daily with the ongoing Elbaf arc in the manga. As increasingly powerful enemies emerge, the main characters need new strengths to overcome them. Haki has always been an effective way to counter many abilities, but Oda seems to be hinting at the existence of a special type of Devil Fruit that can even counter “overpowered” powers like immortality. Interestingly, one member of the Straw Hat crew also possesses this ability!
The Power of Devil Fruits in One Piece
Devil Fruits are undoubtedly the most iconic and unique power system in the One Piece world. For a long time, they were the only source of power until Haki was introduced and integrated effectively.
Devil Fruits are divided into three main types: Paramecia, Logia, and Zoan. Each type has subcategories. For example, Paramecia includes a special subcategory called Special Paramecia, with Katakuri being the only known user. Zoan has two subtypes: Ancient Zoan and Mythical Zoan. Logia currently has no known subtypes.
Devil Fruits still hold many mysteries. Their origins have been hinted at in the story, but the full secrets remain unresolved. However, fans know they did not always exist. No Devil Fruits appeared during the first Nika era. Instead, these fruits originated from people’s imaginations in the Second World. Much remains unknown, and fans will have to wait to see what Oda reveals next.
The Most Special Devil Fruit Type: Soul-Based Powers?
As fans know, each new arc introduces stronger and more ruthless villains. The Holy Knights and the Five Elders are two powerful groups active in the Final Saga, and both seem to possess a terrifying ability: infinite regeneration and immortality.
Many questions surround this ability, and fans wonder how it can be countered. Gaban is believed to know a way, possibly using Haki, but there might be another method involving a very special Devil Fruit.

Some Devil Fruits in One Piece can affect a person’s soul. The most notable example is Big Mom, who wields the Soru Soru no Mi (Soul-Soul Fruit).

Another major example is Brook, a Straw Hat pirate who possesses the Yomi Yomi no Mi, a power also based on the soul.

Less obviously, Law’s Ope Ope no Mi also involves soul-related abilities, as he can swap souls and personalities, as seen on Punk Hazard.
Soul-affecting Devil Fruits could be a major asset in the Final Saga, and Oda may explore this concept further. This power is also why many believe Big Mom will return to the story, as she could play a significant role. Elbaf might be the perfect stage for Big Mom to shine, especially given her important connection to that land through her past.

Another character who might have soul-related powers is the Holy Imu. After all, Imu seems capable of granting powers to others and making them immortal. Imu might even take control of some characters, seemingly affecting their souls, as seen with Gunko and her split personality. However, nothing has been confirmed yet, and fans will have to wait to learn the true extent of Imu’s powers. It’s not impossible that Imu’s ability could be similar to Big Mom’s but stronger in every way.
