Unlike the Snakeman seen on Cake Island, which had swollen forearms and a bouncy physique, this Dark Luffy is slim, sleek, and exudes a cold, captivating aura. Its standout features include sharp, spiked hair and a body fully covered in maximum Armament Haki. The sketches suggest Oda intended to create a fighting form focused on lethal precision and absolute seriousness, contrasting with Luffy’s usual free-spirited style.
Snakeman laid the foundation for Gear 5
Although Oda didn’t include this Dark Snakeman in the story, he admitted it was a crucial step toward creating Gear 5. If you look closely, the influence is clear.
The connection between the Gears isn’t just about power but also design philosophy. First, the fiery hair style of Snakeman evolved into the fluffy white cloud-like hair of the Sun God Nika form in Gear 5.
Then there’s the Hagoromo sash, originally the smoke swirling around Luffy’s neck in Gear 4, which was refined into a more elegant, mythical ribbon in Gear 5. Finally, the physical strength and devil fruit mechanics tested in the Snakeman sketches helped Oda develop Gear 5’s incredible ability to transform the surrounding environment.
Instead of choosing a dark color scheme for his ultimate power, Oda flipped the concept to pure white with a playful personality for Gear 5. While Gear 5 is beloved, some fans feel it leans too much into comedy. This makes the existence of Dark Luffy’s concept even more exciting, hinting at a future balance.
Could Dark Luffy appear in the Final Saga?
