Next year, the Gensou Suikoden anime, based on the popular RPG Suikoden II, will premiere. However, the official reveal of the character Nanami’s new design has sparked a storm on social media.
Nanami is a beloved female character, known as the half-sister of the protagonist Riou. Fans say her new anime design strays too far from the original game version, especially with the revealing crop top.
The image posted on the official Suikoden anime account quickly racked up 1 million views along with countless complaints from fans.
Why fans are upset: too much skin and breaking character lore
Interestingly, while many anime remakes face criticism for over-censoring female characters (like the recent Dragon Quest 7), Nanami is being criticized for showing too much skin compared to the original. In the game, Nanami’s outfit is modest, but the new anime design features a crop top, tank top, and flashy sandals.
The Suikoden fan community feels these changes ruin Fumi Ishikawa’s original design and contradict the character’s background.
First, fans pointed out the outfit versus climate inconsistency: “Why is Nanami’s stomach exposed? She lives in the northern region where it’s cold. Showing shoulders and belly completely contradicts the original story, right?”
