If you’re a gamer or otaku from the ’80s or ’90s generation, you’ll agree that anime character designs from the 2000s have a unique style you just can’t mix up. This was an era where characters often wore bright colors and bold lines that perfectly matched their personalities and storylines.

Even though animation technology has advanced unbelievably today, we still have to tip our hats to those designs that have left a fiery mark on the collective memories of fans.

Let’s take a time-traveling ride to revisit 10 looks that defined an entire era.

10. No Face (Spirited Away)

No Face from Spirited Away

No Face’s genius lies in its minimalist design: a shadowy figure with an emotionless mask. From a terrifying spirit consuming others’ greed to a silent companion, this ambiguous appearance is the key to the film’s worldwide appeal.

9. Naruto Uzumaki (Naruto)

Naruto Uzumaki from Naruto

The blond ninja taught us never to give up. Naruto’s bright orange and blue outfit is a clear tribute to Dragon Ball’s Goku. This loud color scheme perfectly reflects the desperate desire for attention of a boy shunned by others but harboring the great power of the Nine-Tails.

8. Monkey D. Luffy (One Piece)

Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece

At first glance, Luffy’s design seems simple, but that’s the trick. He defies every pirate stereotype with his lightweight outfit and iconic straw hat. This design symbolizes freedom, courage, and contrasts perfectly with his boundless energy.

7. Ryuk (Death Note)

Ryuk from Death Note

With pale blue skin, predatory eyes, and a sharp grin, Ryuk sports a punk-gothic look full of dark charm. Originally intended to look more human, his final monstrous design made him an icon of moral ambiguity in this thriller masterpiece.

6. Lelouch vi Britannia (Code Geass)

Lelouch vi Britannia from Code Geass

Whenever Lelouch dons the Zero outfit, the hype reaches its peak. The sharp mask, reminiscent of a Go king’s piece, combined with the dramatic black cloak, perfectly captures the image of a strategic antihero leading a rebellion.

5. InuYasha (InuYasha)

InuYasha from InuYasha

His striking silver hair and bright red Suikan outfit inspired by the Heian era, paired with the beaded necklace of fate, create a design for the half-demon InuYasha that’s both fierce and vulnerable. This is undoubtedly one of Rumiko Takahashi’s most famous creations.

4. Death the Kid (Soul Eater)

Death the Kid from Soul Eater

The “king” of obsessive-compulsive disorder. His monochrome color scheme and three asymmetrical white stripes on his hair, ironically the very thing that drives him crazy searching for symmetry. A gothic yet humorous design that reflects the quirky personality of the Death God’s son.

3. Haruko Haruhara (FLCL)

Haruko Haruhara from FLCL

Haruko Haruhara embodies pure chaos in the form of a girl. Bright pink hair, a red jacket, oversized sunglasses, and a vintage guitar used as a weapon, Haruko represents the experimental art style and absolute rebellion of FLCL.

2. Haruhi Suzumiya (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)

Haruhi Suzumiya from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Haruhi Suzumiya is a goddess who doesn’t know she’s a goddess. Her extremely ordinary look, a school uniform and orange ribbon, contrasts sharply with her eccentric personality. A girl searching for aliens and time travelers to escape boredom became an icon of 2000s otaku culture.

1. Alphonse Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

The younger brother in a massive suit of armor stole our hearts. Alphonse’s design is a towering medieval armor, majestic yet hiding a gentle, sensitive soul. This image is a poignant symbol of loss and resilience after a forbidden alchemy ritual, earning its place as the decade’s ultimate design.
