In Dragon Ball Z, Kaio-Ken and Super Saiyan mark two major milestones in Goku’s growth. One is a power-boosting technique taught by King Kai, while the other is the legendary Saiyan transformation. If combined, Goku would wield a strength far beyond any opponent.
Yet throughout Dragon Ball Z, fans rarely see Goku use both powers simultaneously in the main storyline. So, what’s the reason?
Kaio-Ken was Goku’s first trump card
After sacrificing himself in the battle against Raditz, Goku travels to King Kai’s planet to train for the upcoming fight against Vegeta and Nappa. There, he learns Kaio-Ken, a technique that multiplies strength, speed, and Ki for a short time. However, Kaio-Ken puts tremendous strain on the user’s body.
From the start, King Kai warned that overusing Kaio-Ken or pushing it too far could seriously injure or even kill Goku.
During the Saiyan and Namek sagas, Kaio-Ken plays a crucial role. Goku uses it to overcome Nappa, battle Vegeta, defeat the Ginyu Force, and even hold his own against Frieza’s final form. Still, it remains a risky technique requiring near-perfect Ki control.
Super Saiyan gradually replaces Kaio-Ken
The turning point comes when Frieza kills Krillin on Namek. Goku’s rage triggers his first Super Saiyan transformation, one of anime’s most iconic moments. Compared to Kaio-Ken, Super Saiyan also greatly boosts fighting power but is much more stable.
More importantly, Goku no longer needs to maintain perfect Ki control like with Kaio-Ken. After training before the Cell Games, he can sustain Super Saiyan almost naturally, like his base form. This makes Super Saiyan the new foundation of Goku’s power, and Kaio-Ken is used less frequently.
Theoretical potential of Kaio-Ken is even greater
Interestingly, Kaio-Ken has no fixed limit. If the body is strong enough and Ki control is precise, theoretically the user could activate Kaio-Ken times 50, 100, or even higher.
Meanwhile, Super Saiyan only grows stronger as Saiyans reach new evolutionary levels. However, there’s a cost to pay.
Even Kaio-Ken times 20 during the fight with Frieza pushed Goku’s body to its limits. Increasing the multiplier further was practically impossible in Dragon Ball Z’s timeline.
Why doesn’t Goku combine both?

This question has puzzled fans for years. Since Kaio-Ken multiplies power exponentially and Super Saiyan is already extremely strong, combining them would create an almost unbeatable warrior.
The main reason lies in the conflicting nature of these powers. Kaio-Ken demands extremely precise and stable Ki control every moment.
On the other hand, Super Saiyan, especially the initial form, is triggered by intense emotion, rage, and an explosive energy surge.
These states are almost opposites. One requires absolute calm, the other thrives on fierce emotion. Without perfect control, the massive energy could overwhelm Goku’s body before defeating his opponent.
Goku actually did combine them once
Many viewers assume Goku never combined Kaio-Ken with Super Saiyan. In fact, he used this state during the Other World Tournament against Pikkon.
However, this arc only appears in the anime and is not part of Akira Toriyama’s original manga, so it’s often considered non-canon. It wasn’t until Dragon Ball Super that Goku officially combined Kaio-Ken with Super Saiyan Blue in the main storyline.
The reason he could do this is that Super Saiyan Blue offers extremely refined Ki control, unlike the traditional Super Saiyan.
Still, Goku admits maintaining this form puts enormous strain on his body and can only be sustained briefly.
