One Piece, the masterpiece by genius mangaka Eiichiro Oda, has spanned decades and is still ongoing. Yet fans don’t seem to mind, as intense battles, humor, and relatable characters keep them hooked.

One of the biggest questions has always been whether Oda will ever make Luffy and Nami an official couple.

Luffy and Nami: One Piece’s beloved duo

LuNami (or LuNa) is one of the most popular pairings in One Piece. Their friendship is built on countless moments of loyalty, trust, and mutual care, especially during tough times. Both Luffy and Nami deeply care for each other.

This genuine bond makes their relationship so appealing, leading fans to see them as the most reliable couple. Recently, an official anime spin-off called One Piece in Love even portrayed two students named Luffy and Nami clearly having feelings for each other. Many fans took this as a hint toward a potential romance between the Straw Hat captain and navigator.

Eiichiro Oda: “One Piece is not a romance manga”

Although fans eagerly hope to see Nami truly fall for Luffy, One Piece has always focused more on brotherhood and dreams than romance. This applies to the other Straw Hats as well, as Oda deliberately steers clear of romantic themes to keep One Piece true to its shounen roots.

In an interview with Shounen Jump, Eiichiro Oda was asked who Nami likes, and his answer was simple: “Nami probably sees all the good qualities in the male characters, including Luffy, but ultimately, One Piece is not a romance manga.” He even mentioned there won’t be any romantic relationships among the Straw Hats, reminding fans once again of his no-romance rule.

This isn’t the first time Oda has addressed this. He firmly crushed fan hopes for romantic scenes in the upcoming live-action One Piece series on Netflix, emphasizing the story’s focus on the crew’s journey and dreams.

Nami’s true feelings for Luffy

As mentioned, Oda confirms that Nami recognizes the good qualities in Luffy and the other male crew members, but her feelings are purely brotherly. She currently doesn’t view any of them romantically.

However, there’s always a chance Oda might change his mind in the future, especially if he wants to surprise fans with a romantic twist near the story’s end. Whether Nami ends up with Luffy or not, their relationship will remain one of the strongest and most genuine bonds in One Piece.
