Since its debut in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997, Eiichiro Oda’s legendary manga One Piece has shattered records to become the best-selling series of all time. Alongside this success, the anime adaptation (airing since 1999) continues to captivate audiences worldwide with stunning visuals as the story enters its Final Saga.
Recently, all eyes have turned to Roronoa Zoro, Luffy’s trusted right-hand man and one of the series’ most beloved characters.
Jump Books’ official X (Twitter) account has confirmed that a prequel novel focusing on Zoro’s past will be released on July 3, 2026, in Japan. The novel is written by Jun Esaka, known for popular spin-offs like One Piece novel: Heroines and Naruto: Sasuke Retsuden. Japanese readers can already pre-order the book, while international fans eagerly await news of an English translation.
The Lost Path and Rise as a Pirate Hunter

The novel mainly covers the period after Zoro leaves Shimotsuki Village. Carrying a promise to his late childhood friend Kuina, he sets out to challenge Dracule Mihawk for the title of “World’s Strongest Swordsman.” However, his chronic poor sense of direction causes him to get lost at sea, unable to find the Grand Line.
To survive, Zoro relies on his exceptional swordsmanship to hunt dangerous pirate crews for bounties. From an unknown swordsman, the “Pirate Hunter” Zoro quickly gains fame across East Blue, with rumors of his strength spreading even beyond the ocean to the Grand Line. Before meeting Luffy in Shells Town and facing a death sentence, Zoro encounters many characters and survives countless life-or-death challenges.
A Meaningful Gift for Zoro Fans

Although this project is not directly written or supervised by Eiichiro Oda, meaning the events may not be considered canon, it offers a fascinating addition to the One Piece universe. Since the main story has not deeply explored Zoro’s life before joining the Straw Hat crew, Jun Esaka’s novel will provide readers with greater insight into his psychological depth and growth.
Having sparked excitement online since its initial concept in 2024, Zoro’s backstory is now fully realized in this upcoming novel.
