7 Times Dragon Ball’s Power Levels Just Didn’t Add Up

Despite the messy power scaling, over-the-top boosts created Dragon Ball’s most iconic moments.

Who would have thought Dragon Ball actually had a numerical power system if it wasn’t mentioned in the anime? Especially in Dragon Ball Z, each fighter’s strength was measured precisely by the Scouter device. But how reliable were those numbers?

It turns out the story never really cared about those figures. From Android 18 handing Super Saiyan Vegeta a beating to fusion moves that break all the rules, nothing matched the established power scale, but they looked incredibly cool.

Here are 7 classic moments proving Dragon Ball’s power levels were just for show.

1. Android 18 Dominates Super Saiyan Vegeta

By all logic, this fight should have been one-sided. How could Android 18 damage the proud Saiyan warrior Vegeta? Yet she completely outmatched him without transforming or powering up.

The absurdity lies in the fact that Android 18 was an outdated prototype based on Dr. Gero’s old data. Still, she defeated Vegeta, who had previously beaten Frieza. The moment she broke Vegeta’s arm confirmed the battle ignored all power level rules.

2. Cell’s Self-Destruction and Comeback Stronger Than Ever

Perfect Cell in Dragon Ball Z

Cell’s self-destruction after losing Android 18 should have been the end. Instead, the story introduced the Zenkai boost, a Saiyan trait that makes fighters stronger after recovering from near death.

Not only did Cell’s power skyrocket, but he also suddenly mastered advanced techniques like Instant Transmission. This “near-death power-up” completely overturned the power balance. Only Dragon Ball could hand out such free and wild upgrades.

3. The “Over 8000” Milestone and Power Level Breakdown

Vegeta shocked by Goku's power level

When Vegeta saw Goku’s power level surpass 8000 (often misquoted as “over 9000” due to translation errors), he went berserk. At the time, that number was insane, putting Goku in a whole new league.

But that was just the beginning. Power levels soon jumped into the hundreds of thousands and even millions within a single story arc. The entire power scale shattered, making the Scouter system meaningless.

4. The Ginyu Force: Power Without Seriousness

The arrival of the Ginyu Force shocked fans with how power worked. Before, everyone believed the more serious a fighter was, the stronger they’d be. Not true!

The Ginyu Force performed ridiculous poses and acted like street performers, yet they crushed top fighters like Vegeta. The contrast between their goofy antics and battlefield dominance was unbelievable.

5. Fusion, Dragon Ball’s Ultimate Plot Armor

Gogeta Blue fusion in Dragon Ball

Fusion scenes in Dragon Ball act like plot armor. They don’t follow the power system but decide how a character beats a stronger enemy. The visual appeal of Vegito, Gogeta, or Gotenks is undeniable.

But how strong fusion really is has never been clearly explained. Sometimes it feels like simple addition, other times it turns two weaker fighters into a godlike powerhouse. Calculating fusion power levels is impossible.

6. Dragon Ball Super Tosses Power Levels Out the Window

Goku in Dragon Ball Super

In Dragon Ball Super, official numbers no longer matter, and the series doesn’t even try to pretend they do. When Goku reached Super Saiyan God to match Beerus, all previous power logic vanished instantly.

Other fighters also saw unbelievable power jumps. Even ordinary opponents suddenly matched godlike levels. When Super Saiyan Blue became the norm, tracking power levels became a thing of the past.

7. Frieza’s Illogical Power Growth

Black Frieza in Dragon Ball

The most illogical and unstable power growth belongs to Frieza. He breaks every rule. How can someone born with immense power not train at all?

Then, after just a few months of light training, he jumps to Golden Frieza and challenges god-level fighters. That should be impossible. To this day, Frieza’s power leaps are seen as a major disrespect to Dragon Ball’s power system.
