In the Dragon Ball universe, Mr. Satan is often seen by fans as a cowardly fraud, completely at odds with the strong persona he projects publicly. However, it turns out Mr. Satan has valid reasons for his behavior, at least according to revelations from the series’ creator Akira Toriyama.
Mr. Satan is introduced as fame-hungry and weak, especially compared to Goku and the Z Fighters. There’s a common feeling that he doesn’t deserve the praise he receives, and his cowardice in truly dangerous situations only reinforces that view. Still, he somewhat redeems himself during the Buu saga, playing a surprising and crucial role in stopping Buu’s destruction.
Mr. Satan’s Tragic Past Revealed
In a June 2014 interview with Saikyo Jump magazine, Akira Toriyama first revealed the surprising backstory of Mr. Satan:
“When he was young, Mr. Satan trained at a dojo called Satan Castle. Thanks to considerable strength and some luck (like opponents suffering food poisoning), he quickly became the world champion and earned the name ‘Mr. Satan’ from his dojo.”
“One day, while performing in a bar in South City, Satan and his martial arts master made the mistake of mocking the hairstyle of Tao Pai Pai (Mercenary Tao). His master was killed, and Satan was seriously injured. From that day on, Satan vowed never to fight anyone whose true identity he didn’t know or anyone who seemed insanely strong.”
It appears Mr. Satan had a terrifying encounter with Goku’s old enemy Tao Pai Pai, who killed his martial arts master and nearly took his life. Overconfidence led Mr. Satan to face an opponent he had no chance of defeating, and that tragedy haunted him for the rest of his life, shaping his personality and actions.
Tao Pai Pai was just the beginning of what Mr. Satan faced. Later, he confronted Goku and the Z Fighters, and each encounter revealed a harsh truth: there are countless people far stronger than he ever imagined. While Mr. Satan may boast the title “world’s strongest,” deep down he knows the truth. That harsh reality fuels his intense fear whenever he faces real danger.
Mr. Satan’s Tragic Past Was Never Hinted at in the Manga
This detail about Mr. Satan’s past adds depth to his actions throughout the manga. One can only imagine his genuine fear when first facing Buu, a fear grounded in his near-death experience. Yet despite that fear, he overcomes himself and forms a real bond with the mysterious Majin, ultimately playing a key role in saving the world.
It’s unfortunate this important information was never included in the official manga, as it adds complexity to Mr. Satan’s character. His actions, like trying to bribe opponents to lose, make much more sense when you realize the psychological scars he carries. Mr. Satan must protect his reputation, fully aware that failure could mean death.
Mr. Satan is far more complex than many fans realize, and Toriyama’s behind-the-scenes story makes that clear. His fear is completely justified, and that deep-seated fear makes his brave moments in the story even more impressive. Mr. Satan truly is one of Dragon Ball’s most remarkable characters, even if some fans don’t see it.
