The Return of a Legendary Masterpiece
In recent years, we’ve seen a trend of classic anime franchises coming back either as sequels or reboots. This offers a great chance for younger fans to experience iconic stories with modern visuals. Ghost in the Shell is no exception. Although there have been many versions before, this new project carries a whole new level of ambition.
This is the first anime reboot in nearly 10 years, and from the trailer and latest posters, we can see a style that is both nostalgic and meticulously crafted. The anime is scheduled to premiere in Japan on July 7.
When Will This Masterpiece Premiere?
Ghost in the Shell is listed among the Summer 2026 anime lineup. After its debut in Japan, it will be released worldwide via Prime Video.
This project is a collaboration between major players like Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha, and Production I.G. Notably, the animation production will be handled by Science SARU, the studio behind the hit series DAN DA DAN. Moko-chan will make her directorial debut, working alongside screenwriter Toh Enjoe and character designer Shuhei Handa. The soundtrack will be crafted by the duo Ryo Konishi and Yuki Kanesaka.
The previous version of the franchise faced criticism for overusing CG and drastically changing character designs. However, with this stellar production team, fans can expect a successful transformation.
What’s Exciting About the New Ghost in the Shell Story?
Set in Japan in 2029, the world has become highly dependent on information, dominated by a global network of corporations. Yet nations and ethnic groups still exist and clash.
The main character, Motoko Kusanagi, a full cyborg, leads an elite tactical unit including Batou. While commanding, Kusanagi envisions creating a special task force to preemptively strike emerging threats. At the same time, Daisuke Aramaki from the Ministry of Internal Affairs is planning something similar and recruits Kusanagi’s team.
They begin operating under the name Public Security Section 9. Facing complex cybercrimes and international conspiracies, the existence of a mysterious hacker known as the “Puppet Master” gradually comes to light. What fate awaits Kusanagi? What is the true goal of the mastermind behind it all? A new era of Cyberpunk action is about to begin!
