Naruto Live-Action: Why the Chunin Exams Make the Perfect Story

The upcoming Naruto live-action film faces high expectations, with its storyline choice seen as key to success.

After Lionsgate officially announced casting plans for Team 7 in the live-action Naruto project, anime fans’ excitement has only grown. The film will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, known for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and has the support of the original creator Masashi Kishimoto.

Despite the anticipation, many big questions remain, especially about which part of the original story the film will adapt.

The challenge of a feature film adaptation

One of the biggest challenges for the live-action version is its runtime. Unlike a multi-episode TV series, a feature film only has about two hours to tell its story. This means the team must focus on the most important events instead of trying to cover the entire beginning of Naruto.

Many compare it to Netflix’s One Piece live-action, which has been praised for its faithful adaptation. However, One Piece benefits from a long-form series format, allowing close supervision by creator Eiichiro Oda. Naruto’s film format will require a much more condensed story.

If the film sticks to the earliest chapters, the main opponents would likely be Zabuza and Haku. But many feel this arc doesn’t have the epic scope needed for a blockbuster. While these characters are important for Naruto’s growth, the story’s scale is still quite limited compared to what the franchise can offer.

Why the Chunin Exams are the ideal choice

Many believe the Chunin Exams arc would be a smarter choice for the first film. It’s the first major expansion of the ninja world, introducing a wide range of key characters and giving viewers a deeper understanding of the ninja village system.

With careful trimming, the Chunin Exams can build the relationships between Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura, while introducing many characters who will play important roles later. It’s also when fans meet popular ninjas like Rock Lee, Neji, Hinata, Choji, and other young Leaf Village and allied ninja.

Another advantage is the presence of two unforgettable villains: Gaara and Orochimaru.

Gaara is initially portrayed as Naruto’s dark reflection. Both carry sealed beasts inside them, are shunned by others, and struggle with loneliness. However, Gaara chooses a path of violence and hatred, creating a compelling contrast with Naruto.

Orochimaru represents a very different threat. Not only is he incredibly powerful, but he also has deep ties to the Leaf Village’s history and is one of the franchise’s most iconic villains. His appearance opens up mysteries that future films can explore.

Avoid overloading the first film with too much

Naruto live-action cast

Trying to cram too many details into the first film could backfire. Naruto has a vast cast and complex plot, so stuffing too many events risks losing narrative flow and depth.

For example, the Akatsuki organization is crucial to the story, but its full impact only emerges in Naruto: Shippuden. That content is better saved for sequels if the live-action project succeeds.

Similarly, characters like Uchiha Madara, the Otsutsuki clan, and the secrets of the Sage of Six Paths are too large in scope for the first film. Introducing them too early could confuse new viewers and lessen the impact of future installments.

Still, the film should cleverly include brief appearances from supporting characters like Rock Lee, Neji, Hinata, Choji, and other young ninjas. Just a few short scenes can make the ninja world feel vast and alive, setting up stories to come.

With the right starting point, Naruto can become an engaging live-action film that stays true to the original spirit. The Chunin Exams, with its rich cast, intense battles, and the introduction of Gaara and Orochimaru, offers a balanced approach between cinematic scale and loyalty to Masashi Kishimoto’s legendary manga.
