One Piece chapter 1188 delivers one of the most anticipated moments since the Elbaf arc began: Monkey D. Luffy finally confronts Nerona Imu face to face. The chapter makes it clear that the figure at the top of the World Government remains well beyond Luffy’s current reach.

Imu and Joy Boy share a deeper connection than expected

One of the most striking details in chapter 1188 isn’t the battle itself but new hints about the past between Imu and Joy Boy.

Through a brief scene, readers gain more reason to believe the relationship between these legendary figures is more than just eternal enemies. Imu’s memories and the way he refers to Joy Boy have sparked theories that they once shared a very special bond during the Void Century, before ending up on opposite sides.

If this theory holds true, the final battle in One Piece won’t just be a clash of good versus evil, but a story of betrayal, ideals, and secrets buried for 800 years.

Imu’s power continues to astonish fans

The battle also explains why Imu is considered the most dangerous character in the One Piece world.

Imu wields powerful close-range attacks but also continuously creates unpredictable long-range weapons and strikes. His fighting style is extremely versatile, leaving opponents almost no time to adjust.

Even more terrifying is his combat experience accumulated over centuries. If Imu truly has existed since the Void Century, he may be the most battle-hardened warrior Luffy has ever faced.

Loki remains unable to fight

After events in the previous chapter, many hoped Loki would soon join Luffy in battle. However, chapter 1188 shows the Elbaf prince is still heavily affected by his injuries.

Though conscious and even exchanging humorous banter with Luffy, Loki clearly isn’t ready to fight. In several moments, Jinbe steps in to support and protect him from Imu’s attacks.

This means the Straw Hats’ forces remain weakened at a critical moment.

Brook edges closer to the World Government’s biggest secret

While Luffy fights, Brook stands out with notable deductions.

From what he observes at Elbaf, the Straw Hats’ musician begins to realize that behind the Holy Knights lies an even more mysterious force. These clues bring the crew closer than ever to uncovering the World Government’s greatest secret.

This could be a turning point, because if Luffy’s group survives and escapes Elbaf with this information, it could change the entire One Piece world.

The Blade of Nothingness reveals the gap between Luffy and Joy Boy

The biggest highlight of the chapter is the introduction of a brand-new weapon called the Blade of Nothingness: Vohu.

Unlike previous weapons created by Imu, Vohu feels far more dangerous as it affects the environment itself. Trees wither instantly when the sword appears, showing it’s not just a physical attack.

At the chapter’s end, Imu uses Vohu to pierce Luffy’s body, creating a tense cliffhanger.

Even more striking is Imu’s comment after the strike. The mysterious figure states that Luffy is not Joy Boy, implicitly admitting Joy Boy is far stronger than the current successor.

This detail reinforces the idea that even though Luffy has awakened the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika fruit, he still has a long way to go before reaching Joy Boy’s level.

Who can stop Imu?

The ending of chapter 1188 raises many questions. If Luffy truly loses his ability to fight for a while, who can hold Imu back? Loki is still recovering, and Jinbe must prioritize protecting his allies.

Scopper Gaban remains the strongest candidate, though he is not yet at full strength. Meanwhile, Brook, Nami, and Usopp are closest to Luffy but it’s hard to believe they can face Imu head-on.

Another possibility fans mention is Gunko. New signs suggest this character might soon regain control of himself. If that happens, Gunko could become a surprising factor, possibly turning against Imu.

While the answers lie ahead, One Piece chapter 1188 confirms one thing: the final battle has truly begun, but Luffy still needs time to reach his peak power and stand on equal footing with the centuries-old world ruler.
