8 Misleading Nicknames in One Piece That Shock Fans

In One Piece, character nicknames sound cool but the truth behind them often surprises us.

The world of One Piece is full of striking titles designed to build the reputation of its characters. However, as the story nears its conclusion, many truths have come to light that completely change public perception. Some nicknames are actually products of propaganda, misunderstandings, or simply cruel jokes of fate that don’t match reality.

Here are 8 classic One Piece nicknames that turned out to be misleading!

1. Kuma – “The Tyrant”

Kuma the Tyrant in One Piece

The name “Tyrant Kuma” once struck fear into many. The World Government spread the story that Kuma was a ruthless, cold-blooded king of the Sorbet Kingdom. But flashbacks in the Final Saga shattered that lie.

Kuma is actually a selfless father and a kind king. He sacrificed his freedom, humanity, and memories to protect his daughter Bonney and quietly support Luffy’s revolution. The “Tyrant” title was just a cover for the noble sacrifice of a victim caught in a corrupt system.

2. Robin – “Devil Child”

Robin known as Devil Child in One Piece

Since she was eight, Robin was labeled the “Devil Child” because the World Government wanted to paint her as a global threat. They claimed she was the sole survivor of the evil Ohara scholars who tried to revive Ancient Weapons to destroy the world. The truth is Robin was just a history-loving girl with the rare ability to read Poneglyphs and uncover hidden truths. She’s not a devil, the real devils are those who branded her that way.

3. Road – “Sun God”

Road called Sun God in One Piece

In the latest Elbaph arc, Road appears with the grand title “Sun God,” evoking the legendary Nika. However, this turned out to be just the giant’s delusion of grandeur.

Road created a miniature model called the Land of Gods, treating humans inside like toys and crowning himself a god. This nickname is nothing more than self-aggrandizement.

4. Roger – “Gold Roger”

Gol D. Roger known as Gold Roger

The world knows the Pirate King as “Gold Roger.” For decades, the media and government used this name to shape public opinion. Only later did we learn his real name was Gol D. Roger. Replacing “Gol D” with “Gold” was a sinister plot to hide the mysterious “D,” the natural enemy of the gods.

5. Garp – “Marine Hero”

Garp the Marine Hero in One Piece

Garp is celebrated as a “hero” after the God Valley incident, believed to have single-handedly stopped the Rocks Pirates. The truth is he teamed up with Gol D. Roger to win.

The World Government deliberately erased Roger’s role to create a lone hero symbol to boost public trust. Garp himself never cared much for this title.

6. Noland – “The Liar”

Noland called The Liar in One Piece

In the fairy tale, Noland symbolizes lies with his story about a nonexistent golden island. For centuries, his descendants lived in shame. But in the Skypiea arc, Luffy and his crew proved Noland was 100% truthful. He was just a victim of geological changes and tragic historical misunderstandings.

7. Fukurou – “The Silent”

Fukurou known as The Silent in One Piece

As a CP9 agent, Fukurou’s codename “The Silent” sounds mysterious and cold. But this is Oda’s funniest trick. Fukurou is actually a chatterbox who often accidentally leaks secrets due to his uncontrollable talkativeness. This nickname is more of an inside joke within the organization than an accurate description.

8. Buggy – “The Genius Clown”

Buggy the Genius Clown in One Piece

Buggy holds the title of Yonko and the nickname “The Genius Clown,” leading his subordinates to believe he’s a master strategist behind world events. But readers know 99% of Buggy’s success comes from luck and others’ misunderstandings. He’s the perfect example of how if you have enough bravado, the world will give you legendary nicknames.
