Over more than 40 years, Gundam has become one of the most successful mecha franchises in anime history, with iconic series like Mobile Suit Gundam, Gundam Wing, Gundam SEED, and Iron-Blooded Orphans.
However, Mobile Fighter G Gundam stands out as a unique entry, shifting away from the usual war themes to focus on intense martial arts battles, giving it a vibe closer to a fighting game than a traditional mecha anime.
Recently, G Gundam caught renewed attention when Toyotaro, the artist currently working on the Dragon Ball Super manga, unexpectedly redesigned the image of Domon Kasshu for the Gundam Card Game.
The Gundam Card Game, officially launched in 2025, features a wide range of Mobile Suits and famous pilots throughout the series’ history. Similar to Pokémon, One Piece, or Yu-Gi-Oh!, each card has unique stats and skills, allowing players to build strategic decks in various styles.
In this new card set, Toyotaro presents Domon Kasshu with a distinct Dragon Ball flair. The muscular lines, fierce expressions, and dynamic action style easily remind fans of Goku or Vegeta. While staying true to the legendary Gundam character’s spirit, this illustration brings a fresh, energetic feel.
The crossover between Gundam and Dragon Ball quickly received positive feedback from the anime community. Many praised it as an exciting fusion of two major Japanese franchises, showing that Toyotaro remains creatively active despite the long pause in the Dragon Ball Super manga.
Toyotaro Stays Busy Despite Dragon Ball Super Hiatus
Toyotaro last worked on the Dragon Ball Super manga in April of last year. Since the passing of the original creator Akira Toriyama, there has been no official announcement about when new chapters will be released.
Industry sources have suggested that Dragon Ball Super will continue in the future, but so far Toei Animation and Shueisha have not shared concrete plans. This has left many fans eager for the story of Goku, Vegeta, and Black Frieza to move forward.
During the manga’s break, Toyotaro seems to have focused more on special illustration projects like the Gundam Card Game. These works help him stay creatively active and open opportunities to collaborate with other popular anime franchises.
Dragon Ball Super Anime Set for Return
While the manga remains on hold, Dragon Ball fans have reason to be hopeful with the anime confirmed to return soon.
Toei Animation plans to start with Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, a TV remake of the Battle of Gods movie featuring updated animation quality. Following that, the story will continue with a remake of Resurrection of F, showcasing Frieza’s return.
Most notably, there is a plan to adapt the Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc, introducing the villain Moro on screen for the first time. This arc is one of the most anticipated storylines since the Dragon Ball Super manga debuted.
