Fantastic Four: First Steps is the blockbuster kickoff for Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 6, directly linking to Avengers: Doomsday (2026). Many fans expected an explosive film packed with exciting cameos, but Marvel Studios delivered a safe movie with some fresh ideas that ultimately fail to leave a strong impression.

The story follows the married couple Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal) and Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), Sue’s younger brother Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Joseph Quinn), and their close friend Ben Grimm/The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach). Four years earlier, they traveled to space and were exposed to radiation, gaining superpowers. Since then, they have become Earth’s protectors. However, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner) suddenly appears, warning of destruction as the planet-devouring Galactus (Ralph Ineson) approaches.

A Safe Story Focused on Family

Unlike previous versions, Fantastic Four: First Steps does not retell the team’s origin story. Instead, it briefly touches on their past through short flashbacks. At this point, the team has been superheroes for four years, becoming the world’s biggest stars and protectors. Reed and Sue are no longer just a couple but are expecting their first child.

This allows the film to explore the Fantastic Four as a real family. Reed and Sue are about to become parents, while Ben and Johnny prepare to be uncles. They carry new responsibilities while facing their greatest threat yet. Galactus and Silver Surfer possess powers beyond the understanding of Reed, known as the “smartest man alive.”

Silver Surfer and the Fantastic Four

Marvel Studios tapped Matt Shakman, director of WandaVision, to helm this film. Both projects are family-centered stories, focusing on what a mother will do to protect her child. The Fantastic Four have their conflicts and arguments but ultimately unite to fight together. This bond is stronger than that of any other superhero team.

The film features emotional and meaningful moments, showing the team’s willingness to sacrifice for each other and protect every member to the very end. However, the plot remains safe and predictable. The ending feels rushed and unsatisfying, especially considering the scale of the story and Galactus’s overwhelming power introduced earlier. The most memorable moment might be the after-credits scene featuring a highly anticipated character.

Visuals and Sound Stand Out

Unlike other MCU films, Fantastic Four: First Steps is set in a parallel universe, Earth-828, during the 1960s with a unique retro-futuristic style. The setting and fashion blend modern colors with nostalgic touches, evoking the early days of the Fantastic Four in the comics.

The special effects for the team’s powers and Silver Surfer are impressive. From the villain riding a flying board through space to Sue’s invisible shield that scatters light, the visuals are captivating. Action scenes are few and spread out but are all high-quality. The high-speed chase between Silver Surfer and the team across space and the encounter with Galactus bring a certain level of tension.

Action scene from Fantastic Four: First Steps

The soundtrack is catchy and memorable, making a strong impression similar to the scores of Avengers or Wonder Woman. Action sequences use heavy bass rhythms to heighten the intensity. Sound plays a key role in adding impact to the film, which otherwise has a relatively bland storyline. Unfortunately, the visual effects are inconsistent, with some scenes showing clear green screen flaws or lacking smoothness.

Strong Performances Across the Cast

Compared to previous versions, this cast features more seasoned actors. Marvel Studios’ casting choices reflect a desire for a more mature, emotionally complex superhero team. Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, and Joseph Quinn all deliver solid performances.

Fantastic Four cast

Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards is a devoted husband and father, burdened by the “curse of intellect” as he constantly plans for worst-case scenarios to protect humanity and his family. He resembles a version of Iron Man without the armor but faces an even tougher dilemma when his desire to protect loved ones conflicts with saving the world. His internal struggle between emotion and logic is clearly portrayed.

Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards

Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm is a determined mother who balances emotion and reason, guiding Reed in the right direction. Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm lacks the charm of Chris Evans’ earlier portrayal but shows responsibility as a hero. He still flirts but uses it strategically to study enemies. Ben Grimm experiences moments of insecurity over his appearance but bravely pursues love.

Johnny Storm and Sue Storm

The cast’s chemistry is smooth and genuine, making them feel like a real family rather than just a group of superheroes. Even Silver Surfer and Galactus are portrayed with depth, each having their own motives and backstories rather than being one-dimensional villains.

Rating: 3/5

Fantastic Four: First Steps is a decent Marvel superhero film that offers a fresh take by focusing on family bonds, care, and sacrifice. However, as the opener for Phase 6 and Avengers: Doomsday, it plays it too safe and lacks standout moments. With DC’s strong return featuring Superman, Marvel should be cautious not to lose ground to a rival they once led by a wide margin.
