Only those who could counter these powers could stand against them, like when Luffy used water to attack Crocodile’s sand abilities, or when his rubber body made him immune to Enel’s lightning.
However, seeing how overpowering these fruits were for the story, Oda introduced Haki. Although Haki was part of the power system from chapter one, it wasn’t fully explored until later. Because of this, Logia users saw their strength significantly reduced, as their immunity to normal physical attacks was completely nullified by Armament Haki.
Even characters with basic Armament Haki can now harm those once considered invincible. Of course, Logia users still retain offensive power linked to their element and creativity in using their Devil Fruit, but their defense has taken a big hit. This has led many fans to wonder how Logia users can compete with the world-shaking powers of many characters in the Final Battle.
The answer is simple and already established in the story: Devil Fruit Awakening. Awakening happens when a user’s mind and body finally catch up to their fruit’s power, which only occurs after spending significant time with their Devil Fruit. Some theories suggest that when a user aligns with their fruit’s true purpose near death, the fruit can awaken. This might explain why Whitebeard never awakened his fruit, as its destructive nature conflicted with his dream of family.
So far, no confirmed case of a Logia Awakening has appeared in the series, but strong theories say both Akainu and Kuzan experienced it during their 10-day battle on Punk Hazard. One key trait of Awakening, at least for Paramecia types, is the ability to extend the fruit’s power to objects or people around them. The most popular theory for Logia Awakening is that it allows users to transform their entire environment into their elemental domain.
For example, if Crocodile awakened his fruit, he could create a vast desert around him, boosting both offense and defense while improving his sand control. Similarly, Akainu could generate a volcanic environment filled with magma, and Kuzan could create an icy domain like the Antarctic. The current state of Punk Hazard, half lava, half ice, suggests both have undergone Awakening.
Why This Power Could Be Enough for the Final Battle
When the Final Battle unfolds, it will feature the strongest heroes and villains Oda has introduced. Awakening Logia users will be incredibly dangerous because they will fight in environments where every inch of terrain can be controlled according to their elemental power. This immense strength will challenge even Luffy’s Gear 5 level.
This is similar to Domain Expansion in Jujutsu Kaisen, where the environment created by the awakened user can be manipulated in any way they choose. The fact that Punk Hazard remains half burning lava and half frozen ice without Akainu or Kuzan present proves that an awakened Logia’s power is among the strongest in One Piece.
