Whether in the newest opening theme or during Dr. Vegapunk’s broadcast, the Egghead Arc has been filled with brief but memorable cameos. The latest episode delivers the most surprising return yet, bringing back a beloved character after nearly 25 years.
The Egghead Arc Brings Chouchou Back After 25 Years
Among the many characters watching Vegapunk’s broadcast in episode 1148 are the residents of Orange Town, especially Mayor Boodle and Chouchou. This episode marks Chouchou’s first appearance after the timeskip in One Piece.
Although only about two years have passed in the story, the adorable little dog last appeared in the anime in episode 47, which aired on November 8, 2000. This means Chouchou’s return to the anime comes after a full twenty-five years.
However, as seen in episode 1148, much has changed since Luffy first met Chouchou and freed Orange Town from Buggy’s clutches. The town and pet shop have been rebuilt and now stand strong, even featuring a new statue of Chouchou wearing a straw hat and holding a pet food box atop the fountain in the town square.
This statue clearly honors the encounter between Chouchou and Luffy, originally depicted in the manga cover story of chapter 619. Since the anime never fully adapted the “From the Decks of the World” cover stories, Chouchou’s return was delayed until now.
Chouchou Remains One Piece’s Most Nostalgic Character
Overall, even though it took a long time to see Chouchou again, no One Piece fan has forgotten him. His tragic story remains one of the most memorable in the entire series, still moving both new and longtime viewers to tears.
In fact, Chouchou is one of the earliest and clearest examples that even the humblest characters can hide the most heartbreaking pasts in One Piece. It’s unfortunate that Chouchou’s story was cut from Netflix’s live-action adaptation, but fans can look forward to reliving those memories soon through Wit Studio’s upcoming remake.
