On January 11, 2011, episode 483 premiered, marking the heartbreaking departure of Ace. By early 2026, it has been exactly 15 years since that fateful moment. To commemorate this milestone, Toei Animation’s official X account shared a short clip of Ace’s final breath, instantly sparking an outpouring of emotion across social media. Thousands of sorrowful comments from fans poured in, proving that Ace’s impact has never faded.
Portgas D. Ace: A Life Searching for Meaning
Ace was not only Luffy’s older brother but also the captain of the Whitebeard Pirates’ Second Division. From his first appearance in Alabasta, Ace captured viewers’ hearts with his cool yet slightly goofy personality, much like his younger brother.
However, Ace’s life was a series of profound inner tragedies. As the son of Pirate King Gol D. Roger, Ace grew up rejected by the world. He spent his life searching for the answer to the question: “Am I worthy of being born?” The shadow of his father loomed so large that Ace often felt his existence was a sin.
It wasn’t until he met Dadan, Sabo, Luffy, and especially Whitebeard that Ace began to feel the warmth of family. During the Marineford War, seeing the Whitebeard crew and his brother risk their lives to save him, Ace finally found his answer.
He died protecting Luffy from Akainu’s fatal blow, leaving behind a choked-up thank you: “Thank you for loving someone like me.” Ace closed his eyes with a satisfied smile, knowing he was loved and that his existence was not a mistake.
Eiichiro Oda’s Strategic Move That Changed One Piece Forever
Few know that Oda created Ace with the sole purpose of having him die. The author needed a massive shock to push Luffy to his limits and trigger the timeskip. Although his editor advised against killing Ace because of the character’s popularity, Oda remained firm in his decision.
Ace’s death was Luffy’s most painful defeat. After believing Sabo was dead, Ace was Luffy’s only pillar. Failing to protect his brother, combined with his loss to Kizaru at Sabaody, left Luffy devastated. He realized he was too weak to protect anything in the New World.
Fortunately, with Jinbe and Rayleigh’s help, Luffy rose from the ashes. Jinbe reminded him he still had crewmates, and Rayleigh spent two years teaching him Haki. Without Ace’s tragedy, we might never have seen the powerful Emperor Luffy we know today.
