Devil Fruits have always been one of the biggest mysteries in One Piece. They are the main source of power, turning ordinary people into extraordinary fighters, but at the cost of losing their ability to swim. However, few know that these magical fruits did not always exist.
Recently, creator Eiichiro Oda revealed a shocking truth about the origin of Devil Fruits, all tied to a mysterious figure known as the Forest God and the events of the Void Century.
Devil Fruits Were Created by the Forest God

Within the One Piece universe, the story of the Void Century holds great secrets, from the existence of the D. Clan, the Ancient Weapons, to the mysterious Ancient Kingdom. The Egghead arc provided clearer insight into this historical period, especially with the appearance of the Sun God Nika.
Diving deeper, the Elbaf arc reveals even more. In chapter 1037, Oda introduced an ancient text called Harley, which uncovers the existence of three worlds, including events from the Void Century.
The most shocking revelation is the origin of the Devil Fruits. The Harley text clearly states that these magical fruits were created by a mysterious figure: the Forest God. This deity sent “demons” into the world, marking the birth of the Devil Fruits.
The True Identity of the Forest God

So who is the Forest God? Although Oda has not revealed a specific identity, he has given important hints. According to Oda, Devil Fruits are the result of human desires. They were born from powerful wishes long ago. Clearly, science played a key role in turning these desires into reality.
Much like how Vegapunk created artificial Devil Fruits using technology, people living during the Void Century may have learned to create Devil Fruits by gathering human “dreams.” These desires likely produced fruits growing on trees in some forest, and the person responsible for this process, possibly a scientist, was called the Forest God.
