In the biggest update yet for season 3, One-Punch Man announced that Shinpei Nagai will direct the new season at studio JC Staff. Nagai took to social media to reassure fans, explaining that the reason his name was kept under wraps for so long was because he felt he was still relatively unknown and worried it might create a negative impression. He urged fans to “stay calm” and trust the team, saying, “Everyone is giving their all on set.”
Director Shinpei Nagai Responds to Fan Concerns
When Shinpei Nagai was announced as the director for One-Punch Man season 3, many fans reacted negatively. However, on social media, the director spoke out: “I am Shinpei Nagai, director of One-Punch Man Season 3. I fully understand everyone’s reactions. Please stay calm and hear me out.”
Nagai began his message: “I will explain why I was chosen, and it might be a bit long, but please listen.” He shared his career journey, starting as a freelance director before working with major studios. At 37, he entered the anime world with Hiiro no Kakera and learned to blend 3D animation in Aquarion Logos. Later, he joined a 3D company, contributing to projects like Altered Carbon.
Nagai revealed his long-held dream to work for Manglobe and honed his skills on GANGSTA. and Samurai Flamenco to pursue his goal of combining 3DCG and hand-drawn animation. But after Manglobe closed, he partnered with JC Staff, the studio behind One-Punch Man seasons 2 and 3.
Explaining the Unusual Silence
Nagai continued: “During that time, JC Staff became a long-term partner, assigning me storyboard and directing duties throughout the year. However, since I am still relatively unknown and lack notable achievements as an animator, I thought this might leave a bad impression, so I requested to keep it confidential.”
He explained that when he took on the One-Punch Man season 3 project, he wanted to quietly focus on a new workflow to maximize production time. “When the consultation for One-Punch Man season 3 was held, I concentrated on integrating a new workflow, connecting 3D and 2D processes, to make the most of every second of production time,” Nagai said.
The director added: “I sincerely apologize for the silence. The entire team is working at full capacity. I can’t discuss production details, but I’m ready to answer what I can within the limits.”
With the official release date for One-Punch Man season 3 set for October 5, fans won’t have to wait long to see how the story unfolds.
