In the world of manga and anime, the Shonen genre, featuring hits like One Piece, Naruto, and Demon Slayer, often dominates the charts. However, fans of Shoujo, aimed at young girls, know this genre holds some of the most unique and profound stories.
One of the most legendary titles from the 1990s by author Chie Shinohara is Red River, widely known in Vietnam as Dòng Sông Huyền Bí. After more than three decades of silence, this masterpiece is finally breaking new ground by coming to the small screen through an upcoming anime project.
Although the exact premiere date has not been announced, the official project account on X (formerly Twitter) confirmed that the Red River anime will debut in July 2026 as part of the summer anime lineup.
Instead of releasing a trailer right away, the producers treated fans to a stunning key visual revealing the first designs of the main characters. The project is produced by VAP and animated by Tatsunoko Production, one of Japan’s most veteran studios known for classics like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Ping Pong the Animation.
Author Chie Shinohara expressed her gratitude and excitement on the official website, sharing a new emotional illustration to build anticipation ahead of the release.
For those unfamiliar with the original story, Red River follows Yuri Suzuki, a modern girl who just got accepted to university and shared her first sweet kiss with her childhood friend. But her life takes a dramatic turn when she is suddenly pulled into a different timeline during a date.
Yuri wakes up in the 14th century BC, in the heart of the ancient Hittite Empire. There, she is caught in a brutal power struggle and chosen as a sacrificial pawn. Fate leads her to meet Prince Kyle, the empire’s most promising heir. From a vulnerable girl, Yuri embarks on a courageous journey to survive and win the hearts of the people around her.
