In Demon Slayer, the Demon Slayer Corps warriors risk their lives daily to protect humanity from hidden threats. After passing the final exam, each Demon Slayer receives a new uniform and a Nichirin sword, one of the few weapons capable of killing demons. While these swords are impressive, they pale in comparison to Tanjiro Kamado’s secret weapon: his own skull.
Tanjiro’s Signature Headbutt
Although Tanjiro’s head can’t permanently defeat a demon like his sword can, his familiar headbutt move delivers a deeply satisfying impact.
As an untrained Demon Slayer, Tanjiro first used this move against the demon he encountered, and it quickly became his trademark. That poor demon was hit not once, but twice, right in the head by Tanjiro’s charge. Even during training, Tanjiro would headbutt rocks, leading many to speculate that this was his way of strengthening his skull.
Even Fellow Demon Slayers Have Felt Tanjiro’s Headbutt
Tanjiro’s powerful headbutt usually appears for one of two reasons: when he reaches his limit or when he feels the need to protect his sister. For example, the first time he used it on a teammate was when Inosuke tried to attack Nezuko. Tanjiro grabbed Inosuke and knocked him out with a headbutt.
Later, Tanjiro headbutted the Wind Hashira Sanemi in a highly dramatic and tense scene. When taken to the Demon Slayer Corps headquarters for judgment, Sanemi repeatedly provoked Nezuko, even stabbing her with his sword to prove demons can’t control their instincts.
Furious at Sanemi’s actions, Tanjiro broke free from the other Demon Slayers’ restraint and charged at Sanemi. With speed and fierce determination to protect his sister, Tanjiro delivered a headbutt to Sanemi’s face, catching him off guard and knocking him down. The blow was so strong that blood splattered from Sanemi’s wound, showing the extraordinary power of Tanjiro’s “rock-hard” head.
This headbutt shocked the other Hashira and became one of the series’ most memorable and humorous moments, highlighting Tanjiro’s courage and boundless love for his sister.
Tanjiro also used his infamous headbutt when Tengen Uzui tried to take Kanzaki Aoi on a mission. Tanjiro stepped in, saying Aoi wasn’t an official Demon Slayer member and had no obligation to accompany him. Although Tengen dodged the blow, it was still a solid hit.
The Origin of Tanjiro’s Secret Weapon
Believe it or not, Tanjiro’s incredibly tough skull is a recurring topic. It’s said his mother, Kie Kamado, also had a hard skull. Tanjiro recalls a family story where she headbutted a wild boar to protect her children. This might sound strange coming from anyone else, but in Tanjiro’s family, it’s surprisingly believable.
However, it seems not all of Kie Kamado’s children inherited her durable skull. In the Mugen Train arc, Nezuko desperately tried to wake her brother by headbutting him. Instead of success, her face ended up covered in blood. This humorous scene proves just how tough Tanjiro’s skull is, capable of both offense and defense.
Looking back at how many times Tanjiro’s headbutt has succeeded, it’s clear his skull is one of the most powerful weapons in the story.
