Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z is one of the most famous villains turned heroes in anime history, inspiring countless characters since. But it’s his greatest moment that truly sets him apart.

Most fans agree that Vegeta’s story peaks with his death during the Buu Saga. After allowing Babidi to turn him into Majin Vegeta in exchange for power, he falls back into darkness, killing many innocents and challenging Goku. Yet despite this newfound strength, Vegeta soon feels… empty.

Vegeta’s entire growth is put to the test

Vegeta in Dragon Ball Z Buu Saga

By the time of the Buu Saga, Vegeta has lived many years on Earth and, whether he admits it or not, has changed a lot through the battles against the Androids and Cell. He now has a family and genuinely cares for them, even if he rarely shows it.

Still, Vegeta grows frustrated with being weaker than Goku and clings to his villainous identity despite all his heroic deeds so far. When Babidi grants him power, Vegeta believes he can return to his old ways, leading to a brutal attack at the World Martial Arts Tournament.

However, Vegeta soon realizes that committing evil acts is no longer so easy. Facing the recently deceased Goku, who returns for a day, he gradually understands that his new life on Earth truly means something. When Babidi tries to control him, Vegeta begins to see his mistake.

Determined to fight Buu as a way to atone, Vegeta challenges Babidi’s control. Yet even with his Majin power, he is losing to Buu. He understands that the only way to win might be to sacrifice himself… and after everything, he’s ready to do just that.

Vegeta’s sacrifice reveals how deeply he’s changed

Majin Vegeta self-destructs

Vegeta shares a touching farewell with Trunks, holding his son for the first time before knocking him (and Goten) out to keep them safe. He briefly talks with Piccolo, wondering if he’ll meet Goku in the afterlife. Piccolo tells him his dark past is too great, and he won’t reunite with Goku there. Vegeta calmly accepts his fate without resistance. He says goodbye to his family and Goku, then dies in a massive explosion. Tragically, this still isn’t enough to stop Buu.

This sacrifice isn’t a step back in Vegeta’s character development. Instead, it shows even he didn’t realize how much he had changed. Vegeta once believed cruelty and coldness brought strength, not seeing that he had become much stronger as a hero.

His choice to sacrifice himself is an acceptance of who he truly is. He genuinely cares for his friends, family, and Earth. He’s no longer the ruthless man he once was, and he can never go back. Deep down, Vegeta is furious with himself for falling into Babidi’s trap.

In many ways, Vegeta’s sacrifice in the Buu Saga isn’t the peak of his redemption but its beginning. It’s when he realizes he isn’t evil and no longer wants to be. It’s when he understands there are things more precious than himself, and that his recent actions were a terrible mistake he must atone for.

Vegeta’s sacrifice shapes his character in Dragon Ball Super

Vegeta vs Beerus in Dragon Ball Super

After that event, Vegeta’s behavior becomes more nuanced in both Dragon Ball DAIMA and Dragon Ball Super, as he strives to make up for past mistakes. In Super, he’s willing to do anything to please Beerus to prevent Earth’s destruction. But when Beerus threatens Bulma, Vegeta is ready to fight a God of Destruction to protect his wife.

Later, during the Tournament of Power, Vegeta puts on a villainous front again to “challenge” Cabba, another Saiyan from Universe 6, helping him break through and reach Super Saiyan. It’s just an act, and Vegeta genuinely feels proud of Cabba’s success, embracing his role as the Saiyan Prince.

Though Vegeta never fully gives up competing with Goku, there are many moments in Super (especially in the manga) where he steps back to support Goku instead of trying to solve problems alone.

When Vegeta attempts to harness the power of a God of Destruction, he realizes once again how much he has matured, the cold detachment needed to wield such destructive power is now beyond his reach. Despite maintaining his aloof personality, Vegeta is a man with a warm heart, and he no longer fears admitting it.
