AI technology has sparked major debates among anime fans and creators, challenging the industry's artistic values.

Today, wherever you go in the entertainment industry, AI is a hot topic. This technology faces fierce opposition from both fans and professional creators who strive to protect the core values of legendary stories.

In Japan, organizations representing artists and voice actors have united to defend the integrity of the billion-dollar industry.

Let’s take a look back at the seven biggest AI scandals that have kept the anime community up at night.

7. Amazon’s Banana Fish Voiceover Backlash

Last year, Amazon faced massive backlash after using AI-generated voiceovers in several major anime projects. Popular titles like Banana Fish, Vinland Saga, and No Game No Life had their human voices completely replaced by machine learning technology.

The result was soulless, disastrous dubbing that led fans to boycott the releases. Under intense pressure, Amazon removed all AI voiceovers and has thankfully not repeated this mistake since.

6. AI-Generated Soundtrack for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

While the TV anime remained untouched, the live-action spin-off Rohan At The Louvre shocked fans by revealing its entire soundtrack was AI-generated.

Despite fan disappointment, the composer stood firm on this decision. With Steel Ball Run arriving on Netflix next month, fans hope the AI controversy will stay in the past.

5. Studio Ghibli Becomes an AI Trend Target

Studio Ghibli, known for masterpieces like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro, was not spared from the AI wave. Many users used AI to recreate real-life scenes in Ghibli’s style, which deeply angered Hayao Miyazaki.

Even the White House sparked headlines by using AI-generated Ghibli-style images. Although the trend cooled by 2026, it still occasionally challenges the value of handcrafted art.

4. Crunchyroll Faces Machine Translation Subtitle Accusations

Last year, streaming giant Crunchyroll was caught up in controversy over the horror anime Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show. Viewers noticed disjointed, inconsistent subtitles, a hallmark of AI translation.

Crunchyroll later explained they outsourced subtitle work to a third party and emphasized, “We do not consider using AI in creative processes, including voice acting, as we value human contributions to storytelling.”

3. The Mystery of Mechanical Marie

One of the most puzzling cases involves Mechanical Marie. Many fans suspect AI was used to create scenes in the anime. The original manga author, Aki Akimoto, gave only brief comments about the visuals, fueling speculation.

The controversy grew so serious that some media outlets refused to cover the anime, suspecting unethical practices, although no concrete evidence has emerged.

2. Toei Animation’s AI Efficiency Push

Last year, Toei Animation, home to Dragon Ball and One Piece, alarmed fans by announcing an AI strategy. While not planning to replace voice actors like Amazon, Toei said they aim to “explore new business opportunities and improve production efficiency by combining AI with animation technology.”

For fans, this sounded like a warning that future hit anime might lose some of the artists’ heartfelt touch.

1. Netflix’s The Dog & The Boy Sparks First Major AI Debate

Topping the list is Netflix’s 2023 short film The Dog & The Boy. This project stirred controversy after Netflix admitted to using AI-generated imagery for all background scenes. The platform justified this as a solution to labor shortages in the anime industry.

However, this explanation failed to calm the anger of background artists, who feel their work is threatened by soulless algorithms.
