After years of waiting, fans finally received great news as the manga Murciélago has been officially confirmed for a TV anime adaptation. The announcement was made during Anime Expo at NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan’s presentation, quickly drawing attention from the action manga community.
According to the announcement, the Murciélago anime is set to air in 2027. This marks the first time the popular manga, known for its violent action and detective themes, will be adapted into animation after more than a decade since its debut.
To bring the intense and bloody world of the original work to life, the project will be co-produced by studios Satelight and Staple Entertainment. Asami Matsuo will direct, while Takashi Naoya will serve as chief director and oversee the overall script.
Additionally, Sei Tateishi is in charge of character design, with music composed by the duo Masanori Akita and Yuichi Tsuchiya. With such an experienced production team, many viewers hope the anime will fully capture the dark atmosphere and brutal action sequences that have defined the series.
Murciélago is a manga created by Kana Yoshimura, serialized in Square Enix’s Young Gangan magazine since 2013. After more than 10 years, the series has released 28 volumes and built a large fanbase thanks to its unique take compared to typical action manga.
The story centers on Kuroko Koumori, a female assassin who was sentenced to death. Instead of execution, she is recruited by the government through a special program to become an “executioner” tasked with eliminating dangerous criminals that the law struggles to handle.
Accompanying Kuroko is Hinako Tozakura, her trusted driver and close partner who supports her in every mission. Together, they face notorious criminal forces, leading to numerous bloody battles as well as darkly humorous moments that define the series’ tone.
The blend of action, investigation, violence, and bold storytelling has made Murciélago one of the most highly regarded mature manga over the years.
However, adapting this work for television raises several concerns. Compared to many manga in the same genre, Murciélago contains a large amount of violent, bloody scenes and mature content. These elements risk being heavily cut or censored when broadcast.
