More than four decades have passed since Akira Toriyama introduced Dragon Ball in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump, launching a new era for shonen manga. Following massive success in Japan, the anime adaptation quickly turned Dragon Ball into a global phenomenon, establishing familiar tropes like transformations, final boss battles, and characters breaking their limits.

Premiering in 1989, Dragon Ball Z continues the story of Son Goku, now married to Chi-Chi with a son named Gohan. However, peace is short-lived as the arrival of the Saiyans reveals Goku’s true origins. From there, Goku and the Z Fighters face increasingly powerful enemies to protect Earth.

While fans often recall legendary battles like Goku versus Frieza or Gohan versus Cell, Dragon Ball Z features many other unforgettable fights that helped build its legacy.

5. Goku vs Kid Buu

As the final villain of Dragon Ball Z, Kid Buu is considered the most dangerous opponent Goku and the Z Fighters have ever faced. Although the Spirit Bomb is not a new technique for Goku, the version used in this battle is massive, drawing energy from all life on Earth.

Mr. Satan’s role becomes a surprising highlight. Using his reputation, he rallies humanity to raise their hands and lend energy to Goku, forming a Super Spirit Bomb powerful enough to destroy Kid Buu.

Initially, Kid Buu pushes the energy sphere back toward an exhausted Goku. Only after Dende restores Goku’s stamina with the Dragon Balls can he transform into a Super Saiyan and deliver the final blow. This victory belongs not just to Goku but to the entire planet, closing Dragon Ball Z on a meaningful note.

4. Piccolo vs Android 17

Once an enemy of Goku, Piccolo gradually becomes a key ally in defending Earth. During the Cell Saga, recognizing the threat posed by the Androids, he fuses with Kami to gain new strength.

After fusion, Piccolo becomes a Super Namekian, able to match Android 17 in a thrilling and evenly matched fight, one of the most visually impressive in Dragon Ball Z.

Notably, Piccolo’s Hellzone Grenade traps Android 17 in a tight spot. Unfortunately, the battle ends inconclusively when Cell arrives, absorbing Android 17 and escalating the saga’s danger.

3. Goku vs Majin Vegeta

The rivalry between Goku and Vegeta remains one of Dragon Ball’s most compelling dynamics. Vegeta refuses to accept being second and constantly strives to surpass Goku.

In the Majin Buu Saga, Vegeta’s pride leads him to let Babidi control him in exchange for immense power. Their battle becomes the most anticipated showdown of the arc.

The two Super Saiyans exchange powerful blows that shake the battlefield. Interestingly, Vegeta is unaware that Goku has reached Super Saiyan 3, which Goku avoids using due to its high energy cost while in spirit form. Ultimately, Vegeta wins with a surprise attack after catching Goku off guard.

2. Gohan vs Cell

From a young age, Gohan was recognized as having potential far beyond his father’s. During the Cell Games, the 11-year-old masters Super Saiyan and becomes the Z Fighters’ greatest hope.

At first, Cell dominates completely. But the death of Android 16 and the suffering of friends at the hands of Cell Jr. trigger an emotional breakthrough in Gohan.

Gohan’s awakening to Super Saiyan 2 is one of the most iconic moments in anime history. This new power allows him to overpower Perfect Cell, something even Goku couldn’t achieve. Many fans believed this marked Gohan’s rise as the new main character of Dragon Ball.

1. Goku vs Frieza

Goku’s first Super Saiyan transformation against Frieza

No battle in Dragon Ball Z is more iconic than Goku’s fight against Frieza on Planet Namek.

For generations, the Super Saiyan form was considered a legend. No one believed it was real until Frieza killed Krillin right before Goku’s eyes.

The pain and rage triggered Goku’s first-ever Super Saiyan transformation in modern Saiyan history. His golden hair and radiant aura instantly became an iconic image for the entire anime industry.

After transforming, Goku completely outmatches Frieza, the tyrant who terrorized the galaxy and destroyed the Saiyan homeworld. This battle not only stands as one of Dragon Ball Z’s greatest but also set the standard for power awakenings in countless shonen manga and anime that followed.
