Enako, Japan’s number one cosplayer, has once again become the center of attention after her reported annual earnings were brought back into the spotlight. With figures reaching 100 million yen (around 16 billion VND), Enako unintentionally sparked a heated debate about the income gap between cosplayers and the low pay received by anime artists.

Netizens Outraged: Cosplayers Get Rich While Anime Artists Struggle?

The controversy began when online communities questioned how a cosplayer could earn so much money from fictional characters, while the creators of those works receive historically low wages. Many argued it was unfair that the anime industry is being drained by derivative activities that do not directly benefit the original creators.

Enako Responds: “Don’t Confuse the Facts!”

Facing accusations, Enako spoke out firmly to protect her reputation. She clarified that most of her income does not come from unauthorized use of copyrights.

The photobooks she sells at Comiket are original photo sets, not based on any third-party copyrighted characters.

For commercial shoots featuring popular anime characters, Enako confirmed she always obtains official permission from the rights holders. These products are typically released through major publishers, ensuring profits are fairly shared with the original creators.

For television appearances, all costumes and characters she portrays are either fully licensed or her own original designs.

Enako also openly shared her income breakdown to dispel baseless rumors. About 50% of her earnings come from brand endorsement contracts. Thirty percent comes from photobook sales and personal merchandise. The rest is from television appearances and events.

She emphasized that her personal income is not directly connected to the pay structure of anime artists. “Even if I stopped working, the financial situation of anime creators wouldn’t improve,” Enako stated. She only wanted to clarify the facts to protect her honor against accusations that she profits unfairly from others’ hard work.

After her strong rebuttal, those who criticized her deleted their posts and publicly apologized to Enako.
