In recent years, Crunchyroll has seen a surge of hit titles like Solo Leveling and Frieren. However, the true sensation that shook the anime world two years ago was Kaiju No. 8. Following the massive success of season 1 (2024) and season 2 (2025), fans expected Kafka Hibino’s journey to continue, but the announcement of the final season has now been confirmed.
Titled “Kaiju No. 8: The Final Chapter,” season 3 will mark the end of the entire franchise on screen. This news came as a real shock since many felt the story was just getting started. The final season is expected to air in late 2026 or early 2027.
Why is this golden franchise ending so soon?
The answer lies in the original manga. Despite being one of the most successful series on Shonen Jump+ with impressive sales (over 19 million copies across 16 volumes, averaging 1.2 million per volume), Kaiju No. 8 manga ended unexpectedly at chapter 129.
The sudden conclusion by author Naoya Matsumoto sparked many theories.
Like many Jump mangaka, the author may have chosen to finish the story early to protect his health rather than prolong it with frequent breaks.
Also, not every creator wants to work on long-running series like One Piece or Naruto. Modern authors, such as the creator of Demon Slayer, tend to end their stories when they feel it’s the right time.
It’s important to note that Kaiju No. 8 was not canceled by Shueisha since its sales remain strong. This was entirely the author’s personal decision.
Concerns over a rushed ending
Unlike Demon Slayer, which had a fairly satisfying conclusion, Kaiju No. 8’s manga ending is seen as somewhat rushed. Fans hope the anime adaptation will add new scenes to enrich the final battle with the ultimate boss, rather than strictly following the manga panels.
With only 23 episodes across the first two seasons, fitting the rest of the story into season 3 raises concerns about pacing. Regardless, we are about to say goodbye to one of the brightest stars of modern Shonen.
