In Eiichiro Oda’s world, even the smallest detail can overturn fan theories. Recently, when One Piece episode 114 was released, the online community discovered a surprising change in chapter 1162 concerning the fate of the mythical Dragon-type Devil Fruit.

From Katakuri to Perospero: Big Mom’s sudden switch

Big Mom's Devil Fruit choice change

In an earlier Weekly Shonen Jump magazine version, during a flashback to the God Valley incident, Big Mom declared her intention to give the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu (Azure Dragon) Devil Fruit to her beloved son Charlotte Katakuri. However, when episode 114 hit shelves on March 4, 2026, Oda officially revised this dialogue.

The name called out was no longer Katakuri but Charlotte Perospero, the eldest son of the Charlotte family. This was not a simple typo but a crucial correction ensuring the story’s consistency.

Why did Oda go through the trouble of changing a name? The answer lies in One Piece’s tightly woven timeline.

Katakuri's Devil Fruit timeline

According to data from the Vivre Card, One Piece Visual Dictionary, Katakuri ate the Mochi Mochi no Mi about 43 years ago. Meanwhile, the God Valley event happened 38 years ago. This means that when Big Mom stole the Dragon Devil Fruit from Kaido, Katakuri was already a Devil Fruit user.

In the One Piece world, except for the unique case of Blackbeard, anyone who eats two Devil Fruits faces death. If Big Mom had given the Azure Dragon fruit to Katakuri, it would have been a death sentence for her own son. By switching the recipient to Perospero, Oda cleverly patched this plot hole, aligning the Vivre Card and manga details.

Did Kaido unknowingly save the world from a superpower?

Big Mom’s original plan was clear. She wanted to possess a powerful “Dragon Child” fully loyal to her to strengthen her family’s power. Imagine if Perospero or any of Big Mom’s children had eaten that Devil Fruit, the balance of power among the Four Emperors would have tipped heavily in Big Mom’s favor.

However, Kaido snatched it first, defeating Big Mom and eating the Devil Fruit right before her eyes. This act not only sparked a decades-long rivalry but also indirectly prevented the world from being dominated by a single force. This small change in episode 114 once again highlights Oda’s meticulous care in building the One Piece empire.
