In the special segment “Odacchi Answers 10 Questions” (featured in Weekly Shonen Jump and later SBS Volume 111), a One Piece fan asked directly: “Has Dragon ever really lived with Luffy?” Oda’s answer not only cleared up the mystery but also revealed an emotional side of the world’s most dangerous man.
A brief past and a father’s heartache
Responding to the fan’s question, Oda confirmed: “Yes, but not during a time Luffy could remember.”
This means Dragon was with Luffy when he was an infant. However, unlike Bartholomew Kuma, who risked everything to stay close to Bonney, Dragon chose a much harsher path.
Oda added: “As the leader of the Revolutionary Army, Dragon cannot let this relationship be discovered, as it would put Luffy in extreme danger.”
The author also expressed empathy, imagining Dragon’s feelings: “I wonder how he felt saying goodbye to his family, and what emotions he had seeing his son in Loguetown.”
Why Dragon can’t be a “nation’s father” like Kuma
Many fans compare Dragon to Kuma, but their positions are vastly different. Dragon is the “World’s Most Dangerous Criminal,” the top target of the World Government and Navy.
Dragon’s strict distance from his son is a harsh survival strategy to protect Luffy from the World Government’s crosshairs. If Dragon appeared often, Luffy would become a prime target from infancy and wouldn’t have grown up peacefully in Foosha Village under his grandfather Garp’s watch.
Despite the distance, Dragon has always watched over Luffy quietly from behind the scenes. The one time he appeared openly was in Loguetown to stop Smoker from killing Luffy. This moment proves he follows every step of his son and only intervenes at life-or-death moments.
Ultimately, Dragon endures the pain of separation so his son can grow freely, build his own path, and gain strength. Only when Dragon’s identity is fully exposed at the Navy Headquarters is Luffy strong enough to stand on his own alongside his trusted crew.
This also explains why “Marine Hero” Garp kept Luffy’s heritage a secret for so long. Knowing everything, Garp chose silence to give his grandson a childhood free from the Navy’s pursuit until he was ready.
The relationship between Dragon and Luffy is not based on closeness but on silent sacrifice. Dragon gave up his role as a father to protect the future of the child destined to change the world.
