Legendary Pokémon always hold a special place in the Pokémon franchise. They appear far less frequently than regular Pokémon and come with stories that make them extraordinary, even among rare creatures.

Some are deeply tied to the history of the regions they inhabit, while others remain mysterious even after appearing in games, anime, and movies. What fans can be sure of is that they are much stronger than ordinary Pokémon, with the most powerful among them possessing god-like strength.

10. Groudon

Groudon in battle

Groudon doesn’t need to chase down opponents because it can turn the battlefield to its advantage. Its special connection to the land allows it to reshape its surroundings.

The wasteland created by Primal Groudon completely nullifies Water-type attacks. This overcomes one of Groudon’s biggest weaknesses and opens up more offensive opportunities for a Pokémon already known for its incredible physical power.

The move Precipice Blades fits perfectly with this fighting style, turning Groudon’s control over the ground into a devastating weapon.

9. Kyogre

Kyogre unleashing rain

Kyogre’s biggest advantage lies in its ability to change battle conditions before either side acts. The rain it summons boosts Water-type moves while weakening Fire-type attacks. When it reaches Primal Kyogre form, its weather control intensifies with Primordial Sea, which completely disables Fire-type moves.

This weather also perfectly complements Kyogre’s massive Special Attack stat. Water Spout can deal huge damage when Kyogre’s HP is full, meaning the conditions that help it defend also enhance its offense.

8. Hoopa Unbound

Hoopa Unbound opening portals

Hoopa Unbound is one of the most unpredictable legendary Pokémon thanks to its ability to create portals using special rings. This lets it move Pokémon and objects between locations, changing distances and launching surprise attacks that opponents struggle to anticipate.

In its Unbound form, Hoopa gains a significant boost in physical power, turning it from a trickster into a dangerous close-range fighter. Its spatial control lets it create opportunities to attack, dodge threats, and constantly disrupt the opponent’s strategy.

7. Rayquaza

Rayquaza soaring in the sky

Rayquaza is considered the guardian of Hoenn, appearing when the region’s natural balance is disrupted. In Pokémon Emerald, Rayquaza intervened to end the battle between Groudon and Kyogre, showing it’s more than just a powerful legendary Pokémon. Its ability to control large-scale crises gives it a unique place in Hoenn’s lore.

Mega Evolution takes Rayquaza’s power to new heights. Its Delta Stream ability suppresses other weather effects and removes Flying-type weaknesses, while Dragon Ascent delivers overwhelming offensive power. Mega Rayquaza is so strong it’s banned in standard competitive play.

6. Eternatus

Eternatus looming large

Eternatus’s most terrifying threat isn’t just its direct attacks. The massive energy surrounding it caused the Darkest Day and is closely linked to the Dynamax phenomenon in Galar. Controlling or stopping Eternatus’s energy has proven extremely difficult.

Eternamax Eternatus reveals the full extent of this power. Its enormous size and energy far exceed normal Pokémon, boasting the highest Base Stat Total in Pokémon history. This makes conventional battle rules nearly ineffective against it.

5. Necrozma

Necrozma absorbing light

Necrozma becomes especially dangerous because its power isn’t limited to its base form. Driven by an endless hunger for light, it can absorb light from other dimensions and forcibly merge with Solgaleo or Lunala to become Dusk Mane or Dawn Wings Necrozma.

Using Ultra Burst to regain lost light, Necrozma transforms into Ultra Necrozma, one of the toughest opponents in Pokémon history.

The scariest aspect of Necrozma is its ability to increase power by absorbing light, turning a vital energy source into a deadly weapon.

4. Palkia

Palkia warping space

In most battles, distance matters because the farther an opponent is, the longer it takes to reach them. Palkia breaks this rule with its space-controlling powers. It can distort distance, create spatial rifts, and move anything around. Its move Spatial Rend directly shows this power by tearing through space to attack.

In Origin Forme, Palkia’s spatial dominance reaches a new level. Opponents can prepare for speed, endurance, or heavy damage, but when Palkia controls the space itself, those advantages become hard to use.

3. Dialga

Dialga controlling time

No one can escape the flow of time, even in a Pokémon battle. Dialga wields special power over time, allowing it to influence how events unfold. Its move Roar of Time is a clear example of this power turned into a devastating attack.

Dialga isn’t just a Pokémon with time-related strength. According to Pokémon lore, it is the entity that created and controls time itself. This cosmic importance combined with direct battle power makes Dialga an opponent that ordinary strength struggles to overcome.

2. Giratina

Giratina in Distortion World

The Distortion World gives Giratina a unique advantage: natural laws don’t operate normally there. Gravity, movement, and space are all altered, allowing Giratina to fight in an environment that disorients intruders.

Facing Giratina on its home turf means dealing with both the Pokémon and a space designed to suit its strange nature.

Its Ghost/Dragon typing offers many useful resistances and immunities, making Giratina hard to defeat even outside its own world. In the lore, Giratina is considered the strongest member of the Creation Trio, with power that can overwhelm both Dialga and Palkia.

1. Arceus

Arceus, the Original One

Arceus doesn’t need battle achievements to prove it’s number one. Known as the Original One, Arceus is said to have existed before the universe and created the Creation Trio: Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina. This places Arceus at the center of the powers that shape reality in the Pokémon world.

Its in-game abilities reinforce its special status. Multitype lets Arceus change its type using different Plates, and its move Judgment changes type accordingly to gain STAB. The Legend Plate further enhances its adaptability by allowing it to switch types based on its opponent. Thanks to this, the creator of the Pokémon universe can counter nearly any foe.
