Once a hot topic of debate in the global manga and anime community, “Shota Oni” has made a dramatic turnaround by officially changing its name just before its 2025 premiere.
Recently, the anime adaptation’s producers surprised fans by announcing that the film would no longer use its original, well-known title. Instead, the work will debut under a brand-new name: “Ore to Yuu-nii!” (Translated as: Me and Brother Yuu).
Explaining this unexpected name change, author Nakayama Miyuki shared candidly on social media. Few know that “Shota Oni” originally began as a personal project the author created for fun and freely published.
The initial title “Shota Oni” was simply a genre label to help readers identify the story. However, when Square Enix acquired the rights and moved forward with a large-scale anime production, the straightforward name became a ticking legal and PR time bomb.
“Avoiding the name to protect the anime”, A smart move amid criticism
The core issue stems from the sensitive keyword “SHOTA.” The story centers on the romantic relationship between Tsubaki, an elementary school student, and Yuu, a high school student. Although the content is considered a gentle romance, the original manga faced heavy backlash from Western audiences.
Many extreme opinions argued that romanticizing such an age-gap relationship was inappropriate. With the anime aiming for a global audience, keeping a title containing a controversial term was seen as too risky.
Renaming it “Ore to Yuu-nii!” gives a warmer, more relatable feel, focusing on the characters’ bond and brotherly affection instead of emphasizing the genre tag. This is viewed as the producers’ effort to calm international critics and protect the author’s artistic vision from prejudgments based solely on the title.
For those unfamiliar, after going viral on social media, the manga became one of the flagship titles for Square Enix’s Gangan BLiss label in 2021. As of March 2025, the manga has released six volumes and maintains a loyal fanbase.
Alongside the name change announcement, a special illustration by Nakayama Miyuki was released to reassure fans. Though the title has changed, the heart and sweet moments of the story will remain intact.
